Walter was born on November 23, 1924 in Lovington, NM to William Middleton Nelson “Bob” and Amanda Belle (Cagle) Beverly and passed away in Lubbock, TX on May 11, 2016. He married Betty Marie Robertson in Lovington on July 22, 1945 at the Methodist Church and they shared 64 years of life and love. Walter proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was a radio specialist servicing B-17 Bombers stationed in England and honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant. He was a charter member and 2nd Lieutenant of Troop 27 of NM Mounted Patrol; a long time member of the Open Range Cowboy Assoc.; Assistant Administrator for Lea County Detention Facility; gas station owner; worked for an automotive dealership across Texas; managed the school bus barn for twenty two years and found time to help coach baseball teams when his boys were young. Walter was a member of Lovington Masonic Lodge # 46 and served as secretary for many years, Worshipful Master, and in many other capacities. He also was a member of Order of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Patron numerous times. His ability to memorize the parts of the Lodge and Stars was impeccable and amazing. He had a sense of humor that was a delight and the knowledge stored in his memory was like a walking encyclopedia. He loved to grow and eat the “hottest peppers” and was the best sourdough biscuit baker around. He loved people and enjoyed serving his community and the people. Walter was a very personable, talented and truly good Christian man with a vast amount of friends. He loved First United Methodist Church and had been a member there for over 50 years. He would share that he considered himself a “jack of all trades and master of none”. He was the best husband, father and friend anyone could ever have. Walter was a legend in his time and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty; brother Jim (Katie) Beverly and step brother Roy Lyles; sister Bennie Lee and step sister Nora Bob; one granddaughter: Lauren Marie Beverly and his dear friend, Wanetto Benge. Surviving him are his two sons: Mike and wife Karen Beverly of Duncanville, TX and Jim and wife Barbara Beverly of Placitas, NM; and those he considered like his own children David and wife Pauline Minton of Lovington; and special “son”: Jimmy Tulk of Prairieville, LA; brother-in-law: Max Robertson of Lubbock, TX; six grandchildren: Marc (Erin) Beverly of Albuquerque, Will Beverly of Denver, CO, Maria Beverly of Little Elm, TX, Christine Beverly of Albuquerque, Jackie (Troy) Bathman of Parker, TX; Jennifer (Justin) Venteicher of Frisco, TX; twelve great-grandchildren: Logan, Sierra, Jake (Amanda), Max, Samantha, Ben, Josh, Blake, Christian, Aiden, Amelia and Lola; two great-great grandchildren: Brie and Cooper; five nieces: Betty Lou Cheney of Roswell, Cindy (Clyde) Ferguson of Lubbock; Marsha (Dick) Ganley of Bala-Cynwyd, PA, Jean (Jim) Phillips of Lubbock and Lisa (David) Fields of Sandia, TX; two nephews: Max Dale (Sharon) Robertson of Hartsel, CO, Bill Chandler of Texas. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Food Bank, 407 North Main, Lovington, NM 88260 in Walter’s memory. Condolences may be sent to www.kirbysmithrogers.com.
