Funeral services for Shirley Jo Bailey, 85, of Lovington, NM will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 10:00 am at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jaimie Quinones officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. She was born on August 15, 1934 in Lovington to Woodrow Wilson and Helen Teresa (Carter) Wood and passed away on September 16, 2019 at her residence in Lovington. Ms. Bailey was born in Lovington and attended Lovington High School. In 1952, she married Barney Monroe Bailey on May 21, 1952. Shirley was the epitome of a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother! She was a loving and caring woman and was very protective of her children and especially her grandchildren. She was a Scout leader when her boys were young and attended their ball games and was very supportive of all her children. Some of her enjoyments were bowling and sewing and crossword puzzles and she was a wonderful cook and especially loved cooking for any holiday. She taught her family how to entertain guests in their homes and to be gracious hosts. She collected coffee mugs and was an avid reader and she enjoyed going hunting with her husband and kids and making special breakfasts for the grandchildren. In early years she was employed by the City, first in the water department then at the MVD for many years before retirement. During her tenure with the City, several of the city employees created a band called "City Hall Band" and Shirley sang with the band. She was Open Range Cowboy's Association Sweetheart for 2001 and served as the President of the Open Range Cowboy's Association 1998 – 2009. Shirley was a Nor-Lea Auxiliary Volunteer for many years where she gave of her time to others.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Barney, and one son: Bill Bailey.
Surviving her are two sons: Kevin Bailey and Bryan Bailey, both of Lovington; one daughter: Karen and husband Jim white of Marfa, TX; one brother: Jerry "Bud" and wife Mary Gayle Wood of Roswell, NM and a special loving nephew: Michael Bailey of Lovington. Also, thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 105 North 2nd St, Lovington, NM 88260 in memory of Shirley. Condolences may be sent to www.kirbysmithrogers.com
