Obituary of Jimmie Ruth Smith

2020-006 Graveside services for Jimmie Ruth Smith, 87, of Lovington, NM will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Lovington Cemetery. Jimmy was born on August 22, 1932 in Foster, Oklahoma to Horace and Drannan Blackwood and passed away on January 20, 2020 in Lubbock, TX. Jimmie moved here in 1943 from Oklahoma when she was in the seventh grade. She married Vernon Smith Sr. in Lovington on August 13, 1955. She worked at every drug store in Lovington. They lived thirty eight years in Odessa, TX and she was employed by the sewing factories in Odessa/Midland. She then worked for Texas Instruments and retired from them after twenty one years. She did work for the military and in 1995 she returned to Lovington to make her home. She was very active with Nor-Lea Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the Grandmothers Club and New Beginnings Church. Jimmie loved to read and she was an accomplished cook. She enjoyed giving away her baked goods and her time to help others. While living in Odessa her brother, Johnny Blackwood lived with them during his High School years and graduated from Odessa High. Jimmie and Johnny grew very close during those years. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Smith Jr.; her parents: Horace and Drannan Blackwood; one son: Terry Sims and her sister: Peggy Mabry. She is survived by one son: Vernon Smith Jr. of Odessa, TX; two daughters: Johnette and husband Sam Fields of Hobbs, NM, and Tammy Jean Buford and Alvin of Odessa, TX.; two brothers: Johnny and wifeTerrie Blackwood and Bobby and wife Jane Blackwood both of Lovington; six grandchildren and Eight great-grandchildren and many extended family members
