When I heard of this news, my thoughts went directly to childhood and riding "Blue", helping Bill feed cattle and other snippets of memories from the old ranch at Caprock. I loved going there. Memory is a fascinating thing.
I've been away from Lovington and the people there for most all of my life, but in my heart, they are still an integral part of me--of who I am--and allow good memories to hold on to. Geography, time passed, or the nature of the nurture of the relationship has nothing to do with it. These people are like pieces of the puzzle that construct my body or my sense of self. When I learn of someone such as Pat passing, it is as if little chunks of the puzzle and what it constructs loses a piece. Part of me dies.
It's amazing the connection we have with others regardless of the relationship.
Death, a part of life, and the people in our past, present, and future are all part of our life as an individual, a contributor to a construct of self. Then, with the earthbound separation of death, the pieces of the construct begin to disappear until, one day, self does, too.
But, self's spirit does not.
Take comfort in knowing that Pat's spirit is still among us all and that the Greatest Sprit is in control.
