Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Pitts

Mary Elizabeth Pitts March 17, 1925 - March 21, 2017 Mary Elizabeth Pitts, 92, completed her earthly journey on March 21, 2017 in Lubbock, TX. She was the oldest child of William E. and Texas Stella (Garrett) Bryan and was born on March 17, 1925 in Baird, TX. After attending several different schools as a child, she graduated from Borger High School in Borger, TX and attended Texas State College for Women, now Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX. She graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Texas in Austin, TX. Mary married Douglas E. Pitts Jr, a childhood sweetheart on June 30, 1945 in Richmond, Virginia. They lived in Matador, TX until 1969 when they moved to Lovington, NM. She had resided at Wilshire on Fourth in Lubbock for the past four years. Mary was involved in her children’s many activities and was a very active member of First United Methodist Church in Lovington, NM. She and Douglas enjoyed traveling with their Airstream trailer across the United States and Canada. She was noted for her brownies, apricot preserves and knitting of various items. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of forty seven years, Douglas Pitts Jr and a brother, William E. Bryan Jr. Surviving her are her four children: Kenneth and wife Tami Pitts of Shallowater, TX; Judy Cruse of Flomot, TX; Don and wife Paulette Pitts of Lovington, NM and Lou and husband Billy Cogsdil of Decatur, TX; one sister: Dorothy Grigsby of Denver, CO and one brother: John Bryan of Placitas, NM; thirteen grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 10:00 am MST at First United Methodist Church in Lovington, NM with Matt Bridges officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
