Obituary of Beverly Joan Spears

Beverly Joan Spears May 15, 1931 - October 16, 2017 Funeral services for Beverly Joan Spears, 86, of Lovington, NM will be held on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church with Tim Kennedy and Matt Bridges officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Spears was born in Philip, South Dakota on May 15, 1931 to Garland and Marguerite (Carr) Kennedy and passed away at Good Life Senior Living and Memory Care in Lovington on October 16, 2017. She graduated from High School in South Dakota and then attended Black Hills University in Spearfish, South Dakota. In 1951 she moved to Lovington with her parents and was employed for several years in the ASCS office and also for Lea County State Bank. She carpooled with several ladies from Lovington and they all attended ENMU in Portales, driving back and forth each day to attend classes. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA with a degree in Education. Beverly taught the first grade in Hobbs before she became the Jr. Hi English teacher in Lovington, where she taught for many years. She was a member of NEA and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Reading was a great enjoyment for her and also she liked to play Bridge and other games. She married Charles Spears in 1960 and they shared fifty six years before his death. Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents: Garland and Marguerite Kennedy and one son: Michael Lee Spears. Surviving her are her two brothers: Mark and wife Kay Kennedy of Lovington, NM and Bruce and wife Doris Kennedy of Lovington, NM and one sister: Barbara and husband E. J. Nichols of Tyler, TX; one grandson: Garland Clay Spears and Sara Knight of Tucson, AZ and one great-grandson: Ezra. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 11:00 am until 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Beverly’s name to Good Life Senior Living and Memory Care, 1706 N. 2nd Street, Lovington, NM 88260.
