Obituary of Alta Joyce Williams

Alta Joyce Williams April 27, 1936 - May 10, 2010 Funeral services for Alta Joyce Williams, 74, of Lovington will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Vergil Ichtertz officiating with burial following at Lovington Cemetery. Alta was born on April 27, 1936 in Brownfield,Texas to Wallace Whitmore and Pashence Luola (Rogers) Awalt and passed away on May 10, 2010 in Lubbock, Texas. She moved to Lovington with her parents when she was three years of age and has lived here all her life. She worked for Warren Petroleum for 10 years, and before that she worked at her mom’s cafe, (Peggy’s Cafe) where she met the love of her life, Alden Wayne “Sonny” Williams. They married on June 1, 1953 in Lovington and celebrated 56 years together. Together they were very instrumental in getting the Sunday evening worship service going, and they were huge workers in the Emmaus Community. Alta enjoyed UMW, singing in the church choir when she could, jigsaw and word puzzles and was well known as a great cook. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Sonny Williams; 1 son: Alan Wayne Williams and one brother: Larry Awalt. Alta is survived by two daughters: Pam Bailey and Janet Jones both of Lovington, NM; 5 grandchildren: Michael & wife Kelli Bailey of Lovington, Shayla and husband Rajel Crow of Humble, TX, Kourtney Jones of San Antonio, TX, Morgan Bailey of Lovington and Zach Jones of San Antonio, TX and 5 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 10:00 am until 8 pm at Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home with the family in residence from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, P O Box 745, Lovington, NM 88260.
