Obituary of Charles Winkles

Charles "Leo" Winkles October 12, 1927 - October 24, 2009 Funeral services for Charles “Leo” Winkles, 82, of Lovington, will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Harold Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington cemetery. Services are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Winkles was born on October 12, 1927 in Burkburnett, Texas to Dennis George and Sadie (West) Winkles and passed away at his residence on October 24, 2009. He was married to Dorothy “Jeanne” (Nelson) Winkles on December 14, 1950 in Artesia, NM. Leo moved to Lovington in the early 1950’s, raised his family here and was one of the early members of the Lovington Country Club. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed bird hunting, especially quail hunting and enjoyed dancing in his younger years. He was a member of Lovington Masonic Lodge #46. He was the owner and operator of Leo’s Barber Shop for many years in Lovington before his retirement. He served his country as a mechanic in the Army/Air Force during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jeanne, and three brothers, Ralph, Carl, and Milton Winkles. He is survived by two sons: Sam and wife Carol Winkles of Las Cruces, NM and Mark and wife Jeri Winkles of Dolores, CO and one daughter, Kathleen Almaguer of Lovington, NM, eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 27th from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Wednesday, from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm. with the family in residence on Wednesday from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm.
