Obituary of Darrell Franklin Young

Darrell Franklin Young February 12, 1954 - November 15, 2017 Funeral services for Darrell Franklin Young, 63, of Lovington, NM will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Queen, NM at the Guadalupe Mtn. Christian Camp Church with Paul Trone officiating. Burial will follow at Queen cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Young was born on February 12, 1954 in Silverton, TX to Edward F. and Edna Mae (Pond) Young and passed away at home in Queen on November 15, 2017. Darrell grew up in Truth or Consequences till he was thirteen and then moved with his family to the Sacramento Mountains. He graduated from Weed High School. Darrell worked various jobs through the years, such as carpentry, plumbing and construction and was considered a “jack of all trades”. He was also the Camp Ranger for Camp Wheinnipay. In 1972 he married Carol Wilson in Sacramento, NM on December 8th. In 1980 they moved to Lovington and he was self-employed and worked in the oilfield. In later years he was employed with and retired from Phillips Petroleum. Darrell enjoyed hunting, fishing, joking with his family and friends but his passion was his family. He loved his wife, daughters and grandchildren and was given the nickname of “Popeye”. His family and friends alike called him by his nickname. He was a giver, an encourager for his girls, teaching them that they could do anything a guy could do, whether it was changing a tire or checking the oil, painting or anything else. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving him is his wife of forty five years, Carol, of the home; two daughters: Jamie and husband Harvey Hebison of Lovington, NM and Rebecca and husband Dusty Jones of Carlsbad, NM; six grandchildren: David, Paul, Levi, Zoé, Caitlyn and Sara; also several brother-in-laws , sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 11:00 am at Guadalupe Christian Camp Church on Saturday, November 18, 2017 until service time at 1:30 pm.
